Canine Good Citizen

(CGC) Prep Class

Our Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Prep Class is designed to refine your dog’s manners and essential obedience skills in preparation for the AKC CGC test. Open to all breeds and ages, this structured group class reinforces key behaviors such as loose-leash walking, polite greetings, and reliable stays in real-world scenarios.

Prerequisites

To enroll, dogs must have completed our House Dog Obedience class or an equivalent training course. While there is no age requirement for the CGC test, puppies who pass should be retested as adults, as behavior and temperament can change over time.

Skills Covered

This class covers all skills needed to pass the AKC CGC test, including:

  • Accepting a Friendly Stranger

  • Sitting Politely for Petting

  • Appearance and Grooming

  • Loose-Leash Walking

  • Walking Through a Crowd

  • Sit, Down, and Stay on Command

  • Coming When Called

  • Reaction to Another Dog

  • Reaction to Distractions

  • Supervised Separation

Any dog, purebred or mixed breed, can register with AKC and take the Canine Good Citizen test. Learn more about the CGC program here.

Class Details

Location: The Noble Beast Dog Training, 428 Zimmerman St., North Tonawanda, NY 14120
Duration: Six 1-hour classes
Cost: $185 per session

Test-Only Option: $25 (availability is limited; priority is given to enrolled students). Email us for details.

Requirements

  • Vaccinations: Dogs must be current on Distemper/Parvovirus and Rabies

  • Health: A recent veterinary exam confirming the dog is healthy

  • Behavior Expectations: Dogs should not exhibit extreme anxiety, fear, or aggression around people or dogs. If your dog struggles with these behaviors, we recommend private lessons before enrolling.

Cancellation Policy

Your registration secures a spot in this group class. If you need to cancel:

  • Full refund (minus processing fees) if canceled 7+ days before class start

  • 50% refund (minus processing fees) if canceled within one week of start

  • No refunds after class begins

If you miss a class or test within a session, makeup options are not guaranteed, but you may take the CGC test on a future test day if available.

Everything You Need To Know

This class covers all of the skills needed in order to pass the AKC CGC test. Any breed or mixed breeds of dog can register with AKC and take the test. Test items include:

  1. Accepting a Friendly Stranger
  2. Sitting Politely for Petting
  3. Appearance and Grooming
  4. Out for a Walk (Walking on a loose lead)
  5. Walking Through a Crowd
  6. Sit and Down on Command and Staying in Place
  7. Coming when Called
  8. Reaction to another dog
  9. Reaction to Distraction
  10. Supervised Separation

    • Must be current on all vaccinations including Distemper/Parvovirus and Rabies
    • A recent exam by a veterinarian where dog was deemed healthy
    • Dogs attending this class should not display extreme anxiety, fear or aggression around other dogs or people. If your dog struggles with any of these problem behaviors, we can address them with private lessons!

    Classes meet at our facility at 428 Zimmerman St. North Tonawanda, NY 14120.

    $185 per session (six 1 hour classes) or Take the test only for $25. Please note, students enrolled in class have first priority for test day. We may or may not be able to accommodate you for a test only option. Please email for more information.

    Cancellation Policy: Your registration reserves your spot in this group class. Please be as courteous as possible and let us know ASAP if you need to cancel your reservation. A full refund, minus payment processing fees, can be issued 7 days prior to the start date of class. Cancellations within one week of the scheduled start date are eligible for a 50% refund, minus payment processing fees. There are no refunds available after the scheduled start date. If payment was not collected at the time of registration, you will be billed accordingly. If you miss a class or test within a session, makeup options are not guaranteed, but you may take the CGC test on a future test day if available.
