Happy Ratters is an exciting and inclusive scent detection sport designed to celebrate your dog’s natural hunting instincts in a fun and safe environment. In this unique activity, dogs are tasked with sniffing out live rats safely enclosed in sturdy, well-ventilated tubes hidden within various search areas. The focus is on teamwork, confidence building, and the joy of discovery, making it a great option for dogs and handlers of all experience levels.
Whether you’re looking to strengthen the bond with your dog, provide them with mental stimulation, or work toward titles like RAT and HRAT, Happy Ratters offers something for everyone. Unlike similar sports, Happy Ratters places a strong emphasis on accessibility, welcoming dogs of all ages, breeds, and abilities.

Meet Our Rats
At The Noble Beast Dog Training, our rats are an essential part of the Happy Ratters experience. Currently, we have five wonderful rats who live full-time at our facility:
- Boys: Sean and Kevin
- Girls: Brittney, Meghan, and Rachel
These retired lab rats come from the Genesee Community College Veterinary Technology program and now enjoy a well-deserved retirement in their cozy condo at our training facility. They are lovingly cared for by our staff and clients, receiving plenty of treats and affection.
We prioritize the welfare of our rats by providing enrichment activities and ensuring they get ample rest between classes and events. Their well-being is our top priority, and we’re committed to maintaining a safe and comfortable environment for them.
Exciting news: In early April of this year, we plan to welcome a few more rats from GCC to join our Happy Ratters family!
Novice Class: A Perfect Start
Our Novice class is designed for new teams eager to learn the sport of Happy Ratters or for those working toward RAT and HRAT titles. This class provides a comprehensive introduction to the sport, including:
- Safe and fun exposure to rats
- Overview of Happy Ratters rules and regulations
- Foundational hunting skills for successful scent detection
- Trial-like setups with 1-4 rats, minimal distractors, and visible or slightly hidden tubes
- Teamwork exercises and confidence-building activities
This class is ideal for building your dog’s enthusiasm and setting a strong foundation for future competition. Advanced teams are also welcome to drop in for foundational practice whenever they’d like.
